The Retrofit Academy brings fully-funded courses to Essex to help build skilled retrofitting workforce

The Retrofit Academy (TRA) is working with Essex County Council to provide fully-funded Level 2, and Level 3 qualifications in domestic retrofit, saving learners up to £2,500 in course fees. These qualifications are essential for those wanting to work in the domestic retrofit sector and are important to help advance an essential industry to ensure warm, healthy, sustainable homes across the UK.

The courses are ideal for those new to the world of domestic retrofit, providing a comprehensive and easy to follow introduction to whole-house retrofit. For those with some experience of energy efficiency projects already, the course will build on existing knowledge to provide learners with the bigger picture of domestic retrofit.

Learners that complete the courses will gain a greater understanding of what domestic retrofit is, what it is supposed to achieve, what those that work in the industry need to know, and what to look out for when installing energy efficiency measures in homes.

The course is designed to improve the employability of learners. Employers are increasing seeking staff that understand the fundamentals of retrofitting. The training can open many doors to the individual learner, as well as helping organisations to comply with the requirements of BSI PAS 2035 regulations.

These online courses are aligned with both PAS 2030 and PAS 2035, which support the UK Government’s 2050 net-zero target. PAS 2035 is concerned with assessing domestic dwellings for energy retrofit. This involves identifying areas where improvements can be made and specifying and designing the relevant improvement measures. PAS 2030 sets out the requirements for installing, commissioning, and handing over energy efficiency measures (EEMs) in domestic retrofit projects.

With this certification contractors and installers can grow their business and develop their services and help meet the demand from the many housing associations, businesses and consumers looking to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. The demand for skilled retrofitters is strong, and only set to increase.

“It’s crucial that we have the volume of skilled, competent trades and professionals needed to deliver the decarbonisation of our housing stock. Recent studies have estimated that up to 400,000 new recruits will be needed to form a retrofit army. At The Retrofit Academy, we want to ensure these people really understand retrofit so they can deliver high quality projects,” commented David Pierpoint, CEO of TRA. “We’re delighted to help support the built environment community by creating and inspiring a new workforce to undertake one of the greatest infrastructure challenges in history. Having these courses fully funded will make this more accessible to individuals and SMEs and will help us to reach our goal.”

Fully funded training is available until December 2022, with all learning and assessments to be completed within this timeframe. Assessments area range of online exams, multiple choice questions and written assignments.

Funding is available for those living or working in Essex for the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit
  • Level 3 Award in Domestic Retrofit Advice

Once approval for the course is received, learners will have instant access to a dedicated eLearning platform offering this education to suit their existing commitments. Apply here https://retrofitacademy.org/crf-essex/.

Stephen Hardy, Division Manager at Axis Europe, recently completed a fully funded Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management course in Essex. Stephen commented: “I’ve had an extremely positive experience studying with The Retrofit Academy. The delivery of the course was great, intuitive, and clear, and objectives followed a logical, sequential manner. It has provided me with the ability to implement retrofit into daily activities at work, I’ve been able to expand my knowledge and I’m now able to talk to clients about what they need to be thinking about and their long-term plan. Since taking the course, I’ve been promoted from Contract Manager to Division Manager.”
