The importance of Apprenticeships — supporting National Apprenticeship Week 2021

In the last academic year, UK businesses saw 319,000 apprenticeships started. As it’s the 14th National Apprenticeship Week, there has never been a more important time to showcase the benefits of apprenticeships.

Higgins Partnerships remains committed to providing training and development for all its employees and actively recruits apprenticeships and local labour around its projects as well as office based apprentices in its Head Office.

Steve Leakey, Managing Director of Higgins Partnerships said: “Apprentices are a valuable part of our business and many of us, including myself, have undertaken an apprenticeship throughout our career progression. Training and developing our team is a fundamental part of what we do and through our apprenticeship roles we are able to bring in early talent and progress them through the organisation allowing them to develop a proper career. We are proud to be supporting National Apprenticeship Week.”

Islington resident, Kamal (right) was referred to Higgins Partnerships by I Work in Islington for a Site Supervisor Level 4 Apprenticeship in August 2020. He is now enrolled with London South Bank University working towards his qualification as well as working on Higgins’ Telfer House project in Islington.

Kamal commented about his apprenticeship: “It has really helped that some of the team used to be apprentices so they understand how to help me with my development. Working alongside the site manager has allowed me to get a better understanding of my role and I am more comfortable at doing my job effectively because of the training I have received on site.”

Taliyah (left) has always lived in Harrow and applied for the Site Admin and Liaison role at the Grange Farm project through the Apprenticeships.gov.uk website. She had been studying Performing Art Level 2 at West Herts College but decided she wanted a change of direction to use her good communications skills. Taliyah is now working towards her Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship.

Taliyah commented: “Whilst being on site I am learning a lot and have the opportunity to get a more in-depth experience. I feel very supported and everyone is more than happy to help me.”

Melissa (right), a local Islington resident joined Higgins on a two week work placement in the Social Value team following successful completion of the Women into Construction training programme delivered by Islington Council. Higgins was really impressed with her that they recommended she apply for a Customer Service apprenticeship.

Melissa said: “I have been given a great variety of work, and an insight into the different teams so I can start to understand how they all fit into corporate social responsibility.”

“Build the Future” is the theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2021, taking place between 8th and 14th February 2021, aiming to encourage everyone to consider how apprenticeships help individuals to build the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career.

The 14th annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships, taking place across England, showcases the impact apprenticeships can have on communities, local businesses and regional economies and how they all benefit from the impact of apprenticeships.
