A new affordable housing scheme has won a prestigious award for its exemplary design standards in the housing category of this year’s New London Awards.
The new homes will form part of the City of London Corporation’s York Way Estate in the London Borough of Islington. The City Corporation manages 12 housing estates across the Square Mile and in six London boroughs.
The scheme comprises four new buildings with 91 new homes ranging in size from studios to four-beds alongside a new community centre, extensive play areas and gardens where residents can grow vegetables.
All the flats will be for government-subsidised social rent and achieve a high Home Quality Mark, reducing energy bills for residents and lessening impacts on the environment. A Home Quality mark means it’s been independently assessed and certified.
Half of the homes will be given to tenants of Islington Council. Construction of the project will start in January and completion is due for early 2025.
Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee, Ruby Sayed, said: “This is a fantastic new housing scheme and we are delighted that its quality has been recognised in the New London Awards.“We are working at pace to give Londoners high-quality, affordable housing and to combat climate change by building low carbon emission homes.
“Housing shortage and high housing costs are a threat to the capital’s competitiveness and the ability of London’s businesses to attract and retain workers. The capital’s housing shortage is one of the most pressing social issues that we face, and we have plans to develop many new homes across London.”
Steve Leakey, Managing Director of developer Higgins Partnerships, said: “With work due to start on site in the new year it is really rewarding to see this important 100% affordable housing development, which will provide much needed new homes for the local community, recognised by these awards.
“We look forward to working in partnership with the City of London Corporation and the existing local community of York Way Estate to deliver a development that everyone will be proud of.”
