Working in partnership with Denbighshire County Council, Alliance Leisure announces the start of works on the new water park in Rhyl, North Wales. ISG has been appointed by Alliance Leisure as Principle Build Contractor to deliver the work as part of a long-standing framework agreement.
The scheme forms part of the wider seafront development in the town and the centre will ultimately be run by Denbighshire County Council once completed in early 2019.
The existing skate park on West Parade in the town will be demolished to make way for the aquatic centre, with plans underway to relocate it to a new site.
The contract will deliver a 13,000ft2 leisure pool with flumes, slides and water play features, an adventure area containing a multi-level kids soft play, a changing village and a café and bar area. Externally, the existing splash pad will be retained, but with additional water play equipment installed, various terraced seating areas and an external food and beverage pod.
Julia Goddard, Senior Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, said: “The development in Rhyl will completely transform the town’s leisure provision, creating a stand-out attraction which will draw an estimated 35,000 extra visitors to the area each year. Creating sustainable leisure facilities which inspire community engagement is always our ambition and this latest development project will certainly achieve this.”
The project will see ISG construct a new steel-frame building, designed in a ‘double wedge’, with a wave-form roof. The building envelope consists of contrasting black and bronze cladding to define the adventure and pool spaces. Curtain walling will provide views across the promenade and external splash pad, and offer framed glimpses of the activity within.
Paul Munro, regional director for ISG’s UK Construction North West Business, said: “Since 2010 our framework agreement with Alliance Leisure has helped deliver new leisure amenities across the UK, enabling councils to revitalise their facilities, putting them on a par with the private sector. We are delighted to be working with Alliance Leisure to deliver this latest project, which will be at the heart of the wider redevelopment of Rhyl waterfront.”
