Children from Nell Gwynn Nursery School have unveiled art work ‘The World About Us… A Child’s View of our Neighbourhood’, created as part of a hoarding art project at Higgins Construction and Notting Hill Genesis’ Wooddene Estate in Peckham, LB Southwark.
Over the past month the children have taken photographs within one mile of the nursery of famous or landmark buildings, the local community and environment, local history and the culture within Southwark. These photographs have then been used to create a visually impactful hoarding for Higgins Construction and Notting Hill Genesis’ Wooddene Estate site. At a special grand unveiling ceremony, children from the nursery school were present to officially reveal the finished art project.
Lynne Cooper, Executive Head Teacher for Nell Gwynn and Ann Bernadt Nursery Schools said: “This art project has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the children’s talent and abilities whilst at the same time contributing to improving the environment on Meeting House Lane.
“We are really grateful to Higgins Construction and Notting Hill Genesis for giving us this opportunity to work together in such a creative way and it’s wonderful to see their work given such prominence. It’s been a really positive experience for the children and the nursery school as a whole.
“We’ve been here a long time and this display further helps root us in the community that we are part of — for me it helps signify the bond between the old and the new. The nursery was built in 1914 and the rise of the housing project signifying new opportunities as part of this remarkable community of Peckham.”

It has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience and the art project can now be enjoyed by the local community.”
The new Wooddene was formerly a 1960s concrete build estate forming part of the Acorn Estate along Queens Road in Peckham, Southwark. The project will regenerate the area into a mixed-tenure development with an onsite energy centre that will serve our 333 new homes, along with the Acorn Estate.
Wooddene Estate will benefit from new community facilities, retail space, landscaping and open green space with private and communal garden areas and a community pocket park. Improvements will also be made to surrounding areas and public spaces, including Queens Road and Hollydene.
