Enfield Council has received a £628,000 grant to make derelict land available to deliver 56 new homes in the borough.
The funding will help self-builders who want to get on the housing ladder and bring back into use vacant sites and brings in much needed investment to unlock housing across the borough and create construction jobs. The Council will work with self-builders to deliver up to 56 affordable homes for local residents.
Cllr Nesil Caliskan (pictured above), Leader of Enfield Council, said: “We are delighted to be awarded essential funding for new homes for our residents in the more deprived areas of the borough, which will help to address local inequality.
“We are committed to improving the quality of life for our residents. This funding will create more opportunities for people who are locked out of the housing market. As a local authority we are working hard to tackle housing shortages and increase the supply of affordable homes to meet a range of needs.”
The works will include site clearance, demolition of existing garages and improving access to make the land more developable for self-builders and custom build.
The funding has been granted from One Public Estate (OPE) which is a national programme delivered in partnership by the Local Government Association and the Office of Government Property within the Cabinet Office.
The OPE programme provides practical, technical support and funding to central and local government to deliver property-led programmes, which includes bringing surplus public land forward for housing.
Twelve other local authorities will join Enfield Council in share a total of £8m funding to build new homes in their respective boroughs.
