Complying with London’s zero carbon dwellings policy

Zero carbon dwellings policy seminar will look at how those involved in new housing provision across the capital can achieve compliance.

The seminar covering the new zero carbon dwellings policy will be taking place in London in November. The policy, set out earlier this year, necessitates the mitigation of all carbon emissions from the home through the incorporation of various measures designed to regulate energy use.

London’s BedZED Pavilion, part of the carbon neutral community in Sutton, is the fitting location for the seminar on how to meet the requirements of London’s new zero carbon dwellings policy.

The free event on Wednesday 2nd November will show policy officers, energy officers, designers, developers, engineers and project managers what steps they can take to meet the new policy, which came into force on 1st October 2016. It requires all major new developments to achieve zero carbon emissions for the domestic element of their project.

Measures to increase carbon savings and reduce the carbon offset bill will be discussed, looking specifically at how CHP can be used to ensure the highest possible carbon savings, while avoiding inappropriate specification of this technology. Lessons from other carbon offset mechanisms in the UK and abroad will be explored, and whether is it possible to achieve the zero carbon target using the real life example of the renowned BedZED development.

Adam Duff, sustainability consultant for the host Metropolis Green, will discuss how to optimise carbon savings at the planning stage. Donna Skordili, of the London Borough of Ealing will share Ealing’s approach to the new policy, and John Hyde of CHP specialist ENER-G will explain how to conduct CHP feasibility during the early RIBA stages. Lessons local authorities can learn from international carbon markets will be shared by Jon Buick, from the Local Borough of Merton.

Delegates will also have a chance to see the BedZED development and learn more about the project from Bioregional.

The event will take place on Wednesday 2nd November at BedZED Pavilion, 24 Sandmartin Way, Hackbridge, Surrey SM6 7DF. It will run from 10am-1pm, with registration and networking from 9:30am. For more information and to register for the event, please contact: info@metropolisgreen.com.
