Broadway Centre clinches Building Excellence award

The Broadway Centre in Bradford has clinched a top honour at the 2016 Building Excellence Awards in London.

Bradford Council‘s Building Control Team is delighted that their work with the project team for the Broadway shopping centre has gained recognition after claiming the award for the Best Large Commercial Building.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of high quality projects from around England and Wales, looking at the work carried out by building control teams that work with architects, plan drawers, developers, building contractors and other professionals to ensure buildings are safe, healthy and efficient and meet the standards set by Building Regulations.

The Broadway was the largest shopping centre to open in the UK in 2015 with around 75 retail units over 570,000ft2. It has successfully attracted key retailers to the region, generating further jobs within the city centre — 12,500 during its construction and 2,500 once the centre opened.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “It’s really good to see our building control team be rewarded for all their hard work and dedication in bringing to fruition this amazing shopping centre.”

Ian Ward, general manager at The Broadway, commented: “The Broadway has gone from strength to strength in the 12 months since it opened, due in no small part to our relationship with Bradford Council’s Building Control Team and their ongoing support.

“This means that close relationships were developed with the LABC team before construction started. This approach addressed any issues at the earliest opportunity, avoiding any bottlenecks in the delivery of the project.”
