Hot on the heels of a new Housing Strategy and Housing Delivery Programme, planning permission has been secured for 33 new council homes at three sites in Doncaster.
The sites form part of the first phase of Doncaster Council’s housebuilding programme which was approved by Mayor Ros Jones and her Cabinet last month.
The plans will see 21 homes go up at Adwick Lane in Toll Bar, seven properties built at Appleby Road in Intake and a further five homes created at Athelstane Crescent in Edenthorpe. The quality developments will range from two-bedroom bungalows to four-bedroom family homes using award winning designs from the council’s in house architects.
Cllr Glyn Jones, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing and Equalities, said: “Quality homes for our residents is a priority and this commitment was reflected in our new strategy and council homes delivery plan. Our efforts saw us build 400 new council homes in the previous five years and these three new sites are the first of many we will be bringing forward in the next five years which will see us build a further 500 plus new council homes.
“Given the current economic climate and the uncertainty many councils face, few local authorities will be matching our investment in new council housing.
“We mean business in Doncaster, when we say we are going to commit to delivering a range of new homes which meet the needs and wants of our residents we get on with making it happen. Our housebuilding programme is second to none.”
All the new homes will include the latest sustainable features to make them energy-efficient, cost-effective to run and in turn do their bit for Biodiversity and Climate Change Emergency.
Site preparation works should begin in April. Construction is expected to start in June and the first of the homes should become available in 2022.
All the new council homes will be available on an affordable rent and advertised through St Leger Homes Choice based lettings.
The Council House Build Programme has an existing funding approval of £100m, including £20m available in the Housing Revenue Account and £80m from Council borrowing. This will be allocated in accordance with the specific scheme approvals. Homes England grant is likely to be available to support the delivery of new council homes.
This news comes after the Council made an announcement in January about plans for a £100m housebuilding programme for Doncaster. More on that here.
