Leading developer contractor Higgins has signed the Armed Forces Covenant and pledged to actively support the armed forces community and continue to recognise the value serving personnel, regular and reservists, veterans and military families contribute to the business and the country.
The Armed Forces Covenant represents a promise by the nation that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in day-to-day life. It is a national responsibility involving government, businesses, local authorities, charities and the public.
Steve Leakey, Managing Director of Higgins commented: “We are extremely proud to be supporting the Armed Forces by signing this Covenant. At Higgins, we recognise the value of supporting the Armed Forces community and that both reservists and veterans bring a variety of transferable skills and qualities, developed throughout their military careers to the civilian workplace, which are extremely invaluable, particularly in the construction industry.”
Speaking at the signing, Lt Col Mary Read said: “Higgins is a family-friendly company that has a history of supporting long careers. It’s the ideal environment for veterans and reservists to contribute their skills and develop their careers in the construction industry.
“Higgins has pledged to promote the fact that it is an armed forces friendly organisation by supporting the employment of veterans and service leaders. It also offers flexibility in leave for services spouses and partners before, during and after deployment and will support reservist employees, allowing leave for training and deployment.”
To date all 407 local authorities in mainland Great Britain and four Northern Ireland councils have pledged to uphold the Armed Forces Covenant. In addition over 4,000 organisations have signed the covenant, including businesses and charities.
