High performance windows, doors and curtains for the new ‘Garden Hospital’ in Dumfries & Galloway

High performance windows, doors and curtain walling by CMS Window Systems have helped to deliver the extensive new Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary — a 63,500m2 ‘Garden Hospital’ designed to meet the increasingly sophisticated healthcare needs of the region’s population.

Designed collaboratively by Ryder and NBBJ for High Wood Health consortium and NHS Dumfries and Galloway, the new £212m hospital located on the outskirts of Dumfries provides 344 beds, day case and inpatient surgical suites, an emergency care centre, ambulatory care centre, specialist oncology, maternity and paediatric facilities. It is described as the ‘Garden Hospital’ to reflect its pastoral setting and 17 courtyards.

It is the first hospital in Scotland with all single rooms, giving patients a more private and practical space to receive the necessary treatment and recover. Eight ergonomically-designed operating theatres are equipped with £30m worth of equipment.

CMS Window Systems were awarded the main windows, doors and curtain walling contract by the main contractor. This £5m aluminium fenestration brief involved the complete fabrication and installation of more than 420 windows, 35 stand-alone doors and curtain walling covering more than 8,000m2.

Commenting on the project, Stephen Anderson, Aluminium Contracts Director at CMS Window Systems said: “We’re delighted to have played a key part in this major new healthcare project which looks set to benefit thousands of people in Dumfries & Galloway every year and provide an outstanding working environment for the staff. The design achieves the goal of creating a ‘healing environment’ extremely well, with our windows making an important contribution by enabling optimum natural light whilst helping maintain a comfortable, energy-efficient internal climate.”

The company manufactured all the windows and doors using the Kawneer AA720 system finished in a range of single and dual colour PPC as well as anodised coatings. Ensuring a balance of aesthetics and thermal performance, the 72mm profile incorporates extruded polyamide and patented thermal breaks, insulated centre seals, foam isolators and foam core insulation.

The curtain walling was manufactured using the Kawneer mullion drained AA100 system with a portion provided using the SSG Silicone Pointed version of the system. This design allowed glazing of the curtain walling to be achieved without the use of visible face caps, giving an aesthetically pleasing appearance with flush glazing to the exterior.
