Work is underway in Sunderland on an £18m new site that will include education, sport and training facilities. The new Beacon of Light development is an initiative implemented by the official charity of Sunderland AFC, The Foundation of Light.
The striking cube-shaped development will be the first building of its kind in the country and house education and training facilities with an indoor football pitch above. It is being built on the neighbouring site to Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light and is set to be a huge boost for the local area and community.
The first phase of the project is now complete with the final two stages due for completion over the summer. The new development will boast state-of-the-art facilities, all designed with energy efficiency and green credentials in mind. By way of furthering this, Giacomini UK were selected to provide underfloor heating to the changing areas, showers, toilets, offices and spectactor areas. Heating almost entirely by radiation, underfloor heating is the most natural, efficient and comfortable form of heating, making it the perfect solution for the Beacon of Light.
The Beacon of Light aims to create an inspirational, vibrant, multi-functional Centre of Opportunity where over 6,000 people per week will access Foundation programmes in zones addressing regional challenges in four areas: Education, Health and Wellbeing; Sport and Play; and World of Work.
