Watson Homes hands over affordable housing scheme in Bolton

Salford-based developer and contractor, Watson Homes, has handed over the third and final phase of 33 new affordable rent homes in Bolton for Places for People.

Located on Shepherd Cross Street close to Bolton town centre, works began on the development in Bolton in October 2018. The 33 property development comprises 24 two or three-bedroom houses, and nine two-bedroom apartments in a three-storey apartment block.

The first eight units were handed over at the end of November 2019, with the second eight units following shortly afterwards — at the beginning of December 2019.

In February 2020, the final 17 homes were handed over to Places for People, ready for residents from the local area to move in. Dedicated parking and garden spaces have been provided for residents, and each home has been given a clean, contemporary finish.

Shepherd Cross is located on a brownfield site that had previously been described as an eyesore by local residents. By renovating the area with this new build, the scheme is in keeping with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s ‘Brownfield First’ strategy.

John Wright, Regional Development Manager at Places for People, said: “Working with Watson Homes, we are pleased to have delivered 33 new affordable homes in Bolton. Many of our customers have already secured tenancies, and we look forward to welcoming them into their new homes.”

Mike Watson, Director at Watson Homes, commented: “This project has brought a neglected brownfield site back to life, while providing vital affordable housing options in the Bolton area, where demand outstrips supply.

“Throughout construction, we have worked closely with the Places for People team to create good quality homes for local tenants, where they will feel comfortable and secure for many years to come.”
