Wates Construction relocates Midlands headquarters to Birmingham city centre

Wates Construction has opened a new Midlands head office in Birmingham city centre, following significant growth in the region due to a series of project wins.

The business, which is part of one of the UK’s leading privately-owned construction, property services and development companies Wates Group, will embark on a significant recruitment drive as part of the move.

Relocating from Quinton Business Park, Wates moves into the Colmore District, near Snow Hill Station, bringing the business closer to its partners and project sites in the centre of Birmingham. In a further commitment to the area, Wates will join the Colmore Business Improvement District (BID) Working Group to support improvements and services in the city’s business quarter.

It is currently hiring for more than 40 roles across a range of disciplines, including Project Directors and Managers, Design Managers and Quantity Surveyors, as well as Bid and Social Value Professionals to support projects across the Midlands.

Wates became one of the first construction companies to support flexible working across its entire business last year and the new office, which accommodates 100 people, will promote this with several breakout spaces designed to encourage wellbeing and collaborative working.

Among other major projects in the region, the relocation will support Wates in the delivery of a state-of-the art competition level swimming complex at Sandwell, due for completion this year. It is also delivering three schools in Stratford, Atherstone and Coventry as part of the Department for Education’s school rebuilding programme. With a combined value of £90m, all three schools will be net zero carbon in operation and two will be built using modern methods of construction, embracing off-site manufacture to reduce carbon emissions.

The new office is located near several important projects for the business, including the 28 storey Essex Street tower which will deliver 154 residential apartments in the heart of the city, as well as the recently completed commercial offices at Platform 21, New Street, and Birmingham’s highest residential tower at Left Bank.

John Carlin, Regional Director for Wates Construction, Midlands, said: “Our new regional office in Birmingham not only reflects our commitment to new more flexible ways of working, but it is also a testament to our strong growth in the Midlands over recent years. We are delivering some incredibly exciting projects in Birmingham and beyond, and this relocation puts us right at the heart of the city, enabling us to collaborate more closely with our partners as we expand further and continue to grow our team.”
