The project is a central part of the Council’s ambitious regeneration of the High Street, making it an entertainment destination for local people and the wider community, increasing the number of visitors to Eltham which will then help stimulate other businesses in the area. Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “This project has been challenging but it is at the heart of our ambition is to breathe new life into Eltham Town Centre. I’m delighted that construction is going to schedule and we are on course to open in spring next year. This is delivering major new attractions and new jobs for the local community.”
To mark the occasion Cllr Thorpe and his colleagues left messages on the concrete wall of the lift shaft on the first floor.
Cllr Sizwe James, Cabinet Member for Growth and Strategic Development, said: “The project in the heart of Eltham Town Centre will make a huge contribution towards safeguarding the long term vitality and viability of Eltham. I am also delighted that this development is already bringing much-needed jobs to the area for local people.”
The project has provided more than 100 apprenticeship weeks across the construction, supply chain and design, and 60% of the total spend has been spent within 10 miles of the project.
Adam Worrall, Operations Director at Willmott Dixon, added: “It was a great opportunity to bring everyone together to celebrate this milestone. The could not be achieved without the fantastic One Team work ethic adopted on site between our people, supply chain partners and design consortium. We are delighted to be delivering this project for the Royal Borough of Greenwich and we cannot wait for the project to be open and enjoyed by the community.”
Pizza Express and Nando’s will join the new six-screen cinema complex, which will be run by Vue Entertainment. The Council is currently marketing the first floor unit and has received interest from several strong traders.
The new cinema complex is scheduled to open in spring 2019.
