The rollout of a town-wide full fibre network in Swindon has taken a major leap forward thanks to a new agreement between CityFibre and Swindon Borough Council.
Over 10,000 homes managed by Swindon Borough Council can be among the first to connect to Swindon’s new town-wide full fibre network, giving residents access to faster, more reliable internet services. This is thanks to the signing of a blanket agreement which gives CityFibre permission to connect all Swindon Borough Council properties to the new network it is building across the town.
CityFibre is investing £40m to bring the fastest, most reliable digital connectivity to Swindon and has made swift progress on the town-wide rollout. This new partnership will ensure the project can continue to go ahead smoothly and reach social housing sites as well as other homes and businesses in the area.
Full fibre networks are recognised as the digital infrastructure of the future for both homes and businesses. With near unlimited bandwidth, full fibre will ensure households can utilise the latest smart home technology, stream entertainment across multiple devices and make it easier to work from home, with virtually no buffering or lagging.
Neil Madle (pictuered above), CityFibre’s City Manager for Swindon said: “Swindon is set to become one of the best-connected towns in the country and this new agreement with Swindon Borough Council brings its full fibre future one significant step closer. This means the council’s tenants will be able to access our new gigabit-capable network if they wish to. We can’t wait to connect communities across the town to our network so they can reap the benefits that come with future-proof digital connectivity.”
Sanjay Sudra, CityFibre’s Strategic Wayleave Manager, commented: “This agreement has been many months in planning and would not have come to fruition if it wasn’t for the dedication and support of key CityFibre and Swindon Borough Council staff. Their hard work will provide tenants in Swindon with access to next-generation broadband, serving up benefits for years to come. Congratulations all involved!”
As work is completed in each neighbourhood, internet service providers (ISPs) will ‘light up the network’ with some of the fastest and most competitive broadband packages available in terms of both data and price.
Work on Swindon’s new full fibre network kicked off in October 2020, with construction now well underway in across the town. Once the entire build has been completed in 2024, almost every home and business in Swindon will have access to full fibre broadband.
In Swindon, the network is live with services available from an increasing range of broadband providers with TalkTalk, Fibrehop, Zen, Giganet and Vodafone already in place and providing next generation broadband to residents.
