Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cllr Mike Roberts cut the ribbon this week at the official opening of Stonewater’s new £1m development of eight one- and two-bedroom low-cost rental apartments in Aldershot.
The new Stonewater homes, which will be allocated through the Councils’ Choice Based Lettings scheme, are an expansion of an existing general family and sheltered housing development in Raglan Close, off Newport Road. The apartments have been built on the site of a disused warden’s house and vacant land within the development which is close to the town centre, Aldershot train station and local schools and services.
Jonathan Layzell, Stonewater’s Executive Director for Development, said: “It’s great to see these brand new Stonewater apartments now completed and ready for people to move in. These new homes are an excellent example of how housing providers can reconfigure and enhance existing housing sites to provide more affordable homes in prime town locations.
“We look forward to working with Rushmoor Borough Council and our construction partners on innovative future schemes which help address local demand for good quality, low-cost rental homes in the area.”
Six of the new homes which replace a warden’s house are attached to Wavell Court, a three-storey supported living apartment complex for over 55s. Two further apartments have been built and joined onto existing houses on unused land in Newport Road.
Stonewater delivered the scheme in partnership with Rushmoor Borough Council and PMC Construction. The development was also financed by Stonewater with additional funding support from Homes England and the Council.
Councillor David Clifford, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council, commented: “It was a pleasure to help unveil these much-needed new homes. Meeting the housing needs of our residents and bringing forward new affordable homes is a top priority for the council and this project in particular shows how innovative thinking to reconfigure an existing housing site has been able to create new homes for local people.”
