Key milestone for £6m Salford social housing scheme

Manchester-based property developer, Investar Property Group, has marked a key milestone on its £6m affordable housing scheme in Salford with the handover of 10 new homes.

Work began on Melody Gardens — an affordable housing development of 58 homes for Places for People — in August 2018.

Salford-based contractor, Watson Homes, is carrying out construction work on the scheme, which comprises nine three- and four-bedroom two-storey houses, one two-bedroom bungalow and 48 apartments.

The nine houses and bungalow were officially handed over to Places for People on 15th August 2019, ready for new tenants from the local area.

All 58 homes will be allocated by Places for People via the Local Authorities Choice Based Lettings system to residents who are in housing need.

Situated on the corner of Liverpool Street and Weaste Lane, the land was once home to All Souls Roman Catholic Church before its demolition in 2011.

The houses have a rear private garden, while landscaped areas are being created for those living in apartments.

Watson Homes is now progressing the second phase of the construction programme, with the apartments expected to be completed by November 2019, well ahead of schedule.

Michael Dong, Chief Executive Officer of Investar Property Group, said: “Melody Gardens responds directly to the need for high quality, community-focussed social housing in Salford. The new houses look fantastic and are perfectly equipped to meet the needs of local families.

“We are grateful to have been able to work collaboratively with Places for People and our other supply chain partners to increase the supply of affordable homes in the area.”

Mike Watson, Director of Watson Homes, said: “The first part of this build has been a great success and the team has worked hard to ensure these new affordable homes could be ready for Places for People’s tenants in excellent time.”

Paul McEvoy, Group Head of Affordable Housing Development at Places for People said: “Working with our partners, we are pleased to be delivering quality, affordable homes in Salford.”

The project team has also included TADW Architects and agents, Savills.
