HRH The Duke of Gloucester marks the 150th year since the Harrison Housing Charity was founded

On Wednesday 22nd May, His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester officially marked the 150thanniversary of Harrison Housing, a charity set up by founders Miss Rebecca Goodwin and three sisters, Elizabeth, Amy and Clara Harrison, who were motivated by the poverty and hardship suffered by retired domestic staff.

To celebrate the 150thAnniversary, Harrison Housing hosted a celebration event attended by His Royal Highness, all of the residents, trustees, staff and dignitaries from across many London Boroughs.

The charity’s first home opened in November 1869 in Notting Hill housing 16 residents and over the years many donations of both properties and money have been received allowing this Almshouse Charity to provide and maintain high quality housing and support for older people in need.

Two donors in particular were extraordinarily generous; the first Patron and former Chairman, Sir Anthony Lincoln who left a very substantial legacy and Lady Mallowan, (or Agatha Christie as she is better known) who made major contributions over several years towards the Building Fund.

John Malpass, Chairman of Harrison Housing commented: “We are honoured to welcome His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester, who is the Vice Patron of the Almshouse Association and has had a long involvement with Harrison Housing. I would personally like to thank him for his continued support.

“This event celebrates our history and give thanks to the kind generosity of the thousands of individuals and key benefactors over the years who have contributed to the Charity’s funds and helped provide safe and secure homes of the highest standards for older people in the community to live.

“I am honoured to be Chair of this fantastic Charity and extremely proud of the friendly and supportive atmosphere throughout our homes, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of our Chief Executive, staff and trustees.”

From the very beginning the Charity enlisted a team of Lady Visitors to help support the residents in each and every home. This practice continues today and forms an important part of the life and wellbeing of the residents. Three current visitors have given between them over 100 years of loyal service to the Charity.
