Foundry Wharf completes in St Helens

Work for architects Brock Carmichael has completed on a flagship scheme for Torus Group in St Helens.

One of the largest developments in St Helens, the building is a focal point on entry to the city centre and was complimented by the local planning authority for its contemporary appearance and high quality materials.

Foundry Wharf comprises 130 extra care homes for the over 55s, 109 one-bedroom and 21 two-bedroom apartments built to a high specification. All the apartments have full or Juliet balconies.

The building also includes communal facilities including a guest suite, hairdressers and a bistro which are open to the public within a large foyer which opens out onto extensive secure, landscaped grounds overlooking the St Helens Canal.

Brock Carmichael has designed the £13 million extra care development for the over 55s around the specific requirements and in consultation with Torus using experience drawn from similar, high profile schemes designed by the practice.

Phil Malthouse, Partner at Brock Carmichael added: “Our experience in housing schemes has led us to a design where we make the most of a site to develop a living space with extra care and all the safety, accessibility and security needs that involves, and which is also desirable and accessible for all. It should welcome residents and the local community alike.

The designs included considerations from a sun path analysis as good, natural light is important to health and wellbeing. The Northern and Western part of the site provides private gated gardens including informal seating areas. The perimeter boundary treatment creates a safe and accessible environment for its residents.

The St Helens site is part of a wider Masterplan developed by Brock Carmichael for the land owner. Torus purchased the northern plot fronting on to the junction of Atlas and Standish Streets in 2017.

Occupation at Foundry Wharf started March 2021.
