Over 65 girls from Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, Penygroes had a taste of working in the field of construction as part of an event called ‘Not Just for Boys’, in order to encourage more girls and women to consider a career in the industry.
Adra, the leading affordable housing provider in North Wales, led this event together with Chwarae Teg, a charity that inspires, leads and implements gender equality in Wales. The event was organised to coincide with International Women’s Day (Wednesday 8th March).
During the first part of the event, some Adra staff members came to give a presentation and be on a panel discussion about the construction field and the challenges and benefits of working in the housing field and the construction field.
Sarah Schofield, Adra’s Director of Customers and Communities, who is part of Adra’s Senior Team, was present at the event and shared her experiences with the pupils.
Sarah said: “It is vitally important that we challenge the stereotype that there are jobs for women and jobs for men, there is no fashion what and we are so proud to see this diversity in Adra and to be able to share this with pupils Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, to inspire the next generation of girls in a school so close to our new Decarbonisation hub, Tŷ Gwyrddfai.
“We are also proud to take advantage of a day like International Women’s Day to highlight and promote the opportunities available to women within fields that traditionally have far more men in the jobs than women.
“We would like to thank Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle from the bottom of our hearts for the welcome and the pupils for being great, and a big thank you to all the exhibitors as well.”
The second part of the event was held at Tŷ Gwyrddfai, Adra’s new Decarbonisation Hub in Penygroes.
Here exhibitors such as Dŵr Cymru, CIST/Llandrillo Menai Group, Weber, Marley Solartiles and Travis Perkins were present to carry out practical activities with the pupils.
