Derby City Council equips mobile plantroom with latest ATAG Commercial boilers

ATAG Commercial has supplied Derby City Council with three high efficiency XL180W boilers for a mobile packaged plantroom, helping to provide flexible heating and hot water for a variety of sites, including Perth House care home in Chaddesden.

In addition to the wall-mounted boilers, ATAG Commercial also provided the flues, air ducts and a 500kW plate heat exchanger, as well as auto top-up units, expansion tanks, steel pipework and the control panel.

The plantroom was constructed inside a mobile container by Derbyshire-based plumbing and heating experts STH Mechanical Services Ltd. Once completed at the company’s onsite workshop, the unit was then transported to Derby City Council’s headquarters, ready for deployment to site. The mobile plantroom has been designed for ease of transportation and connection to a property’s pipework, in order to provide energy efficient heating and hot water while minimising downtime and disruption.

Commenting on the project, Steve Hendley, Director at STH Mechanical Ltd, said: “The council required a temporary plant room to cover a variety of different sites, hence the 600kW capacity. We’ve been fitting ATAG Commercial boilers since 2001, so knew they could provide a system that worked well in cascade operation and lead-lag, while looking the part with their purpose-built bracket header assemblies. As it is a temporary plantroom, it will be moved from site to site within the council’s properties. It is built to last, with a good spec and excellent workmanship.”

Initial data has revealed the mobile plantroom to be cheaper to run when compared to the existing boiler set-ups and configurations in the buildings where the unit has been used on a temporary basis since it was constructed in September 2022.

Steve continued: “We find the XL-W from ATAG Commercial one of the best boilers for both low NOx emissions and backup service. We have a great relationship with their representative, Adam Johnson, plus Derby Council also have great confidence in the company; in fact, they have already expressed an interest in creating another mobile unit with a slightly different specification.”

ATAG Commercial’s XL-W offers outputs of 70 to 200kW from a single boiler and up to 1.6MW in cascade. All models benefit from an excellent footprint to power ratio for greater flexibility in terms of installation, which also enables them to be fitted in small spaces and plant rooms — as well as straightforward to access for maintenance.

There are six XL-W models to choose from, available in one Single Heat Exchanger Compact (SEc) and one Single Heat Exchanger (SE) option, as well as two Double Heat Exchanger Compact (DEc) and two Double Heat Exchanger (DE) versions. These Double Heat Exchanger models have the added advantage of built-in backup, with each heat exchanger able to operate independently.

The XL-W can achieve outputs up to 1.6MW and also benefits from a low installation height of just 1.7m. Plus, when fitted in cascade, these boilers have the smallest, most compact footprint (in terms of width) in the industry. As with their floor standing counterparts, up to four of these units can be fitted in-line, while there is also the option to install three or four models back-to-back (i.e. six and eight boilers respectively).
