Cambridge Investment Partnership hands over more council homes at Ironworks, Mill Road

Dozens of local families are moving into the next phase of new council homes which have been completed at Mill Road, Cambridge.

15 one- and two-bedroom council rented apartments have been handed over, providing much needed council house accommodation and forms part of Cambridge Investment Partnership’s commitment to tackling the housing crisis in the city. A further 15 one- and two-bedroom council apartments will be handed over in the New Year.

Ironworks at Mill Road is providing 236 new studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments and two-, three- and four-bedroom homes on the former Mill Road depot site, with 118 private sale and 118 council rented homes.

Cllr Mike Todd-Jones, Executive Councillor for Housing at Cambridge City Council and CIP board member said: “It’s wonderful to see more local residents moving into these brand new council homes at Mill Road. We are extremely proud of what is being achieved at this flagship development, which is providing an income through the sale of the private homes to reinvest into future new council housing in the city.”

As part of the project, a new highly sustainable community centre is being built, as well as a new on-site neighbourhood park, Eagle Park, which will feature a large play area, rainwater gardens and green open spaces. An extensive public art programme is also a key feature of Ironworks with £200,000 allocated towards four commissions. An additional £3.3m contribution will also be given towards local schools, parks, sports centres, NHS, Chisholm trail and open space adoption.

Tom Hill, Regional Director of Hill commented: “Ironworks is a prime example of how our partnership is succeeding and demonstrates our commitment to driving forward new housing, creating highly sustainable homes that are fit for the future and taking a key role in the regeneration of the city for years to come.”

Sustainability is an integral part of the design process and the homes at Ironworks include increased cavity wall insulation thickness, mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR), solar photovoltaic panels, the rainwater gardens, swales, new habitat creation and green roofs.

As part of this development, Cambridge Investment Partnership will also be allocating an area through the site ready for a new leg of the Chisholm Trail to be added at a later date.
