Councillor Tom Renhard, Cabinet Member for Housing Delivery and Homes, recently came to see the progress being made building 74 new homes in Lockleaze, north Bristol.
Abri, a large housing provider, is developing 74 homes with regional contractor Speller Metcalfe undertaking the construction at the Shackleton Heights development. Situated along Crome and Constable Road, 50% of the new homes will be affordable, with 17 for social rent and 20 for shared ownership. A further 37 homes are for open market sale.
To lower their carbon footprint the new homes incorporate renewable energy features such as air source heat pumps, which will help to reduce energy bills for residents.
Visiting the development, Councillor Tom Renhard, Cabinet Member for Housing Delivery and Homes at Bristol City Council, said: “Bristol is tackling the housing crisis and the climate crisis, and it’s great to see these latest 74 new homes doing their bit. Where we can, we want to build in and up, rather than out. Regenerating this former brownfield site is a prime example of that approach.
“In 2021/22, Bristol built 2,563 new homes, bringing the total to the end of that year to some 11,000 new homes since 2016. These 74 new affordable homes – half of them being new affordable homes — are much welcomed as we continue working with developers like Abri to tackle the housing crisis.”
Stephen Lodge, Executive Director Development and Strategic Asset Management at Abri commented: “It was a pleasure meeting with Councillor Tom Renhard and his colleagues to show them the homes in Lockleaze. Abri’s work to build good quality affordable homes has never been more necessary and these homes are a great example of working collaboratively with our partners. We want to continue this partnership approach as Abri works towards its goal of building an average of 1,000 much needed homes every year.”
Mark Eaton, Divisional Director at Speller Metcalfe added: “We’re all delighted that the show homes are now open for members of the City Council and public to view and also that a number of the blocks have already been handed over to the Abri team. We work on a number of housing projects across the south west and are pleased to be nearing another successful completion.”
