100 trees are going to be planted around Nottingham to help celebrate 100 years of council housing. Nottingham City Homes has teamed up with Summerwood Community Garden to plant the first 10 trees at Woodthorpe Grange in Sherwood.
The 10 fruit trees (seven apple and three pear), which were grown by Summerwood at their Clifton plot, were planted on Woodthorpe Park, close to the council owned tower blocks and new extra care facility. Summerwood Community volunteers will be looking after the existing area and the new trees going forward.
Each tree planted marks every year since council housing was first introduced. The other 90 trees will be planted at different sites across the city, including Aspley, Basford, Bestwood, Bulwell, The Meadows, Clifton, St Ann’s and Lenton.
Nick Murphy, Chief Executive at Nottingham City Homes, said: “Planting these trees not only marks a really special year for us, but it is just one of the ways we are tackling climate change. These trees will be a reminder of all that we have achieved in council housing over the last 100 years and all we are still to achieve. Homes have changed over the years but one thing will always remain the same – we want to provide safe, warm and affordable homes for the people of Nottingham and we want to do that for the next 100 years.”
Paul Sanders, NCH tenant and Street and Block Champion helped out at the planting, he commented: “It’s great to have these new trees at Winchester and Woodthorpe. We live in such a beautiful setting already, right on the edge of the park and it’s great that we can add these fruit trees to the area. It will be lovely to watch them grow over the years to come.”
Emma Jordan from Summerwood Community Garden, added: “Planting fruit trees is hugely beneficial for promoting locally grown fruits with food security becoming more and more relevant as we tackle climate change together.”
