SBS expands Nottingham retrofit portfolio with landmark £1.8m project

Principal retrofit contractor Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd (SBS) has begun work on a £1.8m contract to deliver energy efficiency upgrades to almost 100 homes in Clifton, Nottingham.

The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) Wave 2.1 scheme sees SBS partner with Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) and procurement specialist Prosper for the first time.

Having already upgraded more than 2,000 properties in Nottingham, the company is well-acquainted with the area and its residents. However, this contract represents SBS’s first major partnership with NCHA, marking a significant step in expanding its local impact.

With the project set to complete by November 2025 and aiming to improve the average EPC rating of the properties to Band C. Planned retrofit measures include the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and external wall insulation (EWI), supplied by leading UK manufacturer Permarock. A range of modern insulation materials will be used.

Steve Roberts, Regional Director at SBS, said: “Working with new partners is always rewarding, especially in key cities such as Nottingham. The works enables us to make a tangible difference to the lives of these residents in Clifton — both physically and mentally — which is the single core mission of every single project we deliver.

“These properties, built with traditional solid walls in the 1920s, have never been upgraded and have poor thermal performance. This £1.8m project is a vital step towards modernising homes across the UK, helping to meet net zero targets while improving people’s health, comfort and energy bills. We’re also engaged with NCHA on delivering further projects through the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3, which will only strengthen our legacy of work in the area.”

This project represents the next step in SBS’ growth as a leading national retrofit contractor. The business has a strong track record in delivering large-scale housing retrofit decarbonisation programmes across the Midlands, including its recent £20m project in the East Midlands with Rykneld Homes.

SBS also operates in other regions such as Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Wales. Its further expansion into Nottingham reinforces its reputation for high-quality, PAS-compliant retrofit works in both social and private housing.

SBS continues to work with both new and long-standing partners to deliver energy efficiency measures nationwide. Under SHDF Wave 2 alone, it has already completed more than £130m worth of retrofit works and has already begun mobilising for Wave 3, under the newly named Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund (WH:SHF).

Greg Watson, Retrofit Operational Manager at NCHA, said: “Our work with SBS marks the beginning of a new partnership that we’re excited to see develop. Having them on board allows us to continue delivering high-quality resident engagement and retrofit works in collaboration.”
