Deputy First Minister visits Penrhyndeudraeth to celebrate launch of Timber Industrial Strategy

Deputy First Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies was welcomed to a development of new homes at Maes Deudraeth in Penrhyndeudraeth last week. The official visit to the properties in Penrhyndeudraeth marked the launch of Welsh Government’s Timber Industrial Strategy.

On site to welcome him were representatives from ClwydAlyn and Grŵp Cynefin along with contractor Williams Homes. Mr Irranca-Davies was given a tour of the new development, which features 41 timber-framed, energy-efficient houses and apartments.

All the properties at Maes Deudraeth were built using modern methods of construction; this includes prefabricated Welsh timber frame structures. The visit spotlights the importance of the forestry and timber industries in Wales. The launch of Welsh Government’s Timber Industrial Strategy was designed to promote the use of Welsh timber in construction.

This £10 million development will provide new energy efficient, affordable homes in the South Gwynedd town of Penrhyndeudraeth, in Snowdonia National Park.

The mixture of properties comprises 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom homes, 1-bedroom bungalows and 1-bedroom apartments. All homes are built as lifetime homes and designed so that they are easily adaptable to the changing needs of the residents, helping them to live independently for longer. They will be allocated through the Common Housing Register and Tai Teg.

These new homes will meet and exceed the current regulatory standards: Welsh Government Housing Quality Standard, Welsh Government Development Quality Requirements and Welsh Government Beautiful Homes and Spaces Standards.

ClwydAlyn’s aim is to tackle fuel poverty and help minimise the impact less energy efficient homes can have on people’s health and wellbeing.
