The £13.9m redevelopment of Sutton Way in Ellesmere Port has started, which will enable tenants to enjoy new and improved homes.
A partnership between progressive landlord ForHousing and Cheshire West and Chester Council will see work carried out on 10 low-rise apartment blocks to improve the layout and appearance of the estate and tackle anti-social behaviour.
The project will involve extensive refurbishment work on all the blocks, improvements to the exterior of the apartments and the introduction of new modern buildings. Three of the blocks will be remodelled, with some sections of the buildings being removed and replaced with 16 new-build two-bedroom homes. There will also be improvements to the car park, landscaping around the homes, bin storage, door entry system, CCTV, security and the addition of features to help reduce noise.
Janet Lawton from ForHousing, said: “The refurbishment of Sutton Way will be a significant milestone in the regeneration of the area and we’re really excited to get started on the transformation.
“Improving the wellbeing of tenants and communities is one of our main priorities, and providing safe, affordable homes in areas where people want to live is a big part of that.
“Meeting the needs and aspirations of tenants is at the centre of our plans, and we have undergone extensive consultation to ensure we capture their views and address their key issues.
“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council on this project, which will improve lives and create a vibrant local community.”
Councillor Matt Bryan, Cabinet Member for Housing, Planning and Climate Emergency, commented: “The regeneration of this area has involved many years of planning and consultation. We have now reached a significant point and it is fantastic that work can finally begin.
“The residents have been closely involved in these development plans so that it meets their needs. The Council is pleased to work with ForHousing on making these ideas a reality.
“We believe that local residents’ groups can tackle issues of social exclusion and mental health and this development will help improve community cohesion, improve lives and establish a more vibrant local community.”
Property services business Liberty Group has been appointed as the principal contractor to deliver the works.
Ian Elsey, Director of Repairs, Maintenance and Construction at Liberty, said: “Our aim is always to focus on the people we serve, thinking ahead for them to deliver better outcomes, reduce issues and make places safe, smart and better for everyone. Phase one of this exciting project will make a real difference in transforming homes and improving lives for residents in Sutton Way. We are delighted to be working with partners in Ellesmere Port to take it forward.”
