Sika Primary school roofing solution

Roofing contractor, Ice Roofing, has completed a complex upgrade ahead of programme at Robert Bakewell Primary School in Loughborough, using a Sika Liquid Plastics’ roofing system.

Building surveyor, Make, specified a full built-up roofing system with Decothane Ultra low odour cold-applied liquid roofing membrane as the final waterproofing layer for the scheme to address issues with the integrity of the existing waterproofing. The system is also designed to raise the building’s thermal performance to current building regulations standards.

The project was designed to improve the school environment, leveraging funding from the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), an initiative that academies and sixth form colleges can apply for each year.

Sika Liquid Plastics and Make worked closely with the school to compile and upload the paperwork required to access the funds.

The 2,000m2 split-level roof had an existing mineral felt roof which had reached the end of its service life and started to leak. Further water ingress issues had been caused by the failure of existing outlet detailing.

Following a technical specification from Sika after a full site audit, Ice Roofing began the scheme by jet washing the existing surface before beginning installation.

The new warm roof system was installed as an overlay and the existing 30mm insulation on the raised area of the roof was left in situ, with a further 100mm of Decotherm PIR insulation board adhered to the surface using Sika’s Decostik adhesive.

On the lower areas of the roof where there was no existing insulation, Ice Roofing installed 120mm of Decotherm PIR insulation board, adhering it to the roof with Decostik.

Sika’s S-VAP 7000 self-adhesive vapour control and carrier membrane was then applied to the roof prior to installation of the Decothane Ultra low odour waterproofing membrane.

Gareth Davies from Ice Roofing explained: “Installation of the Decotherm PIR board created a robust and even surface for the installation of the cold-applied liquid membrane.

“As the project began during term time, use of the low odour membrane was ideal as it meant that there were no nuisance odours for staff and pupils and it was quick and easy to install too.”

Ice Roofing applied the Decothane Ultra system. A two coat, low odour liquid applied membrane, incorporating a fibre matting to the whole area to create a seamless waterproofing solution.
